Features of the Bed - Durable Construction, Easy to Assemble The beds in the Dutch Collection are some of the finest built anywhere – completely of solid oak or cherry wood, other than the hardware, of course. All of the wood is carefully selected by hand. Honesty, integrity, and hard work are the other ingredients. Even a novice can easily assemble this bed in very little time. The headboard and footboard both have metal clips that interlock with the side rails. This joint is made to fit very snuggly, so we recommend that you gently tap the side rails into place with a rubber mallet and a rag (place the rag over the wood and tap with the mallet). The dovetailed slats easily slide into slots in each side board, as shown in the picture above. The result is a bed that is very sturdy and strong, yet is easy to put together. The Crafting of a Sleigh Bed All beds in the Dutch Collection are built of solid red oak or cherry wood. The wood is planed, and then sanded in a four-part sanding process consisting of 80 grit, 120 grit, and 180 grit sanding followed by a spot check hand sanding. The wood is glued and clamped together at the joints. The shop owner remarks, “When properly done, gluing and clamping is the best fastener there is.” When completed, the beds are finished with a two-part catalyzed finish consisting of a varnish and a Jemini stain.
